Some stuff

Coupla small things from a piece of pistachio I picked up.  Real purty wood, but full of cracks and snarls.  Lots of CA glue and coffee grounds packed into these….

I’d hoped for a vase full of wooden flowers, but the padauk tulip is all I could pull off.

Cheep, cheep….

Mini bird house ornaments made for my girls.  These designs are from Dale Nish.  You can buy them in kits, or use your own wood and designs.  They are about 3-4 inches top to bottom, so you can see how tiny the little birds are.

I hate to toss the little chunks of leftover wood, so these are a good way to make use of use of it.  The cardinal house is from figured maple body, and a cebil wood roof, with African blackwood finials.  I suck at making finials, BTW……

The blue jay abode has a bocote body and a hmmmm….. don’t really know what the top is.  I think it’s birdseye maple, but maybe not.  The finial and perch is holly, that much I know….

Fun to make, but ornaments kinda just sit there.  I think I need to make something more functional….. hmmm

Holiday Stuff….

Bottle stopper in Bois de Rose with figured maple and African blackwood segments.  Damn, this is one beautiful wood, but for the life of me, I could not get a good finish on it.  Sanded back to bare wood 4 times before finally calling uncle…. I ended with a wiping lacquer, but still streaking and some bleeding of the red dust into the maple, but I should have known better trying to segment these together…  But the Bois de Rose is some of the deepest grain and color I’ve ever seen…

Sorry I couldn’t do justice to this.  I have some left over, and it’s very expensive , so I’ll need to figure out how to make it happen…

The ‘ole Scottish spurtle.  These are ancient cooking tools back in Scotland for stirring oatmeal, soups, etc.  They were good practice with the skew chisel, but also a very functional item.  With my (mostly) macrobiotic diet, I do lean towards lots of whole oats and soups and whatnot, so I will need to make one for myself.  You can probably tell I like to glue different woods together, so you can see the celtic knot segments in one them.  Both in maple with walnut knot segment.

Also included my bandsaw reindeer to help with the pix.  These are fun for the kids and easy to whip out on the bandsaw in 5-10 min.

Happy Holidays to all, but with many solemn thoughts to those in Connecticut today….

Kinda-goofy-wine-bottle-holders made from left over bamboo plywood. The end is beveled so they stand up by balancing the center of gravity only. I have a lot of this plywood left over, and lots of wine to give away….. These, I suppose, are good for conversation and keeping the cork from drying out, but not much else…. Oh well, fun to make. I was going to inlay the initials for those receiving the wine, but no time, so some frisket film and paint it was…. A few coats of spray lacquer, and voila….This one pictured is the prototype, so the paint job is jacked up……

Still trying to figure out this turned box thing.  This one out of figured maple, the lid fits a little too tight, so anything inside will be safe and sound once summer comes and the wood moves a little…..

Greene & Greene style end table just finished up…. Not too happy with the finish, but it’ll have to do at this point.  Used a dye stain for the color, and a wipe on oil/varnish blend as top coat.  Way too crazy to wipe on the finish with all of the corners and ebony plugs…..Next time I’ll be spraying the G&G stuff…..

Ebony splines and plugs all around as is mandatory with Greene & Greene style pieces.  This design is courtesy of Darrell Peart which is similar to his Aurora table design.  I chose the waterfall leg design for this one.  I love most of the G&G stuff; it’s got a nice vibe of craftsman and Japanese fusion, with straight lines and textured set backs and reveals….  Made of mahogany with ebony accents

Beautiful video from a Latvian tool maker.  Awesome.

Couple of swings and misses to show off……. the bottle stopper functions but appearance sucks….  Used Alumilite with blue and white pearl mica and tried to mix in some red which did not dissolve…. ended up with little red dots all through.  Oh well, it’s now my own ugly wine plug….

The pen is made from bamboo plywood with a custom blue acylic center band.  Turned out just OK, with a few sanding issues and fit and finish screw-ups.  Oh well, it is what it is…..

Itty bitty box turned for my daughter….. used a throw away 2x4 to make it but she doesn’t know the difference……

Bottle stopper in curly koa with multiple segments of colored veneer, brass, and a homegrown resin insert in the top.  I don’t care for the final shape much, but as a gift it worked out OK…..  For the pens, the first was a checkerboard segmented kit with purpleheart and padauk.  The second is a wood and acrylic combo that I recast for the purple band, ‘cause I completely jacked up the blank when I turned it…..
